6 Life Lessons from Daddy’s Home

The movie Daddy's Home with Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell is about when real dad (Mark Wahlberg) comes home to his family and their step dad (Will Ferrell). The plot is pretty predictable so I'm not worried about revealing any spoilers here and more so focus on some nice reminders and 6 life lessons from this super funny movie!

If you don’t know about the weekly .99 rental on ITunes, then you are missing out! In an effort to save money I pretty much only watch movies I get on that or have via HBO (thanks fam!), Amazon*, or Netflix.

Basically every week there is a .99 rental, sometimes old sometimes new, sometimes good sometimes bad. You can rent it and click “watch later” so you can save it for up to thirty days. Once you watch start it though it disappears after 24 hours!

The other weeks movie was Daddy’s Home* with Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell. This movie is about when real dad (Mark Wahlberg) comes home to his family and their step dad (Will Ferrell). The plot is pretty predictable so I’m not worried about revealing any spoilers here and more so focus on some nice reminders and life lessons from this super funny movie!

1. We are all a little scared.

All of the dynamics in the movie are based around the fact that we are all a little scared of something in life. The kids are scared that step-dad is replacing their dad, the dad is afraid he is being replaced or that he can’t live up to being a dad, step-dad is afraid he’ll never be accepted, mom is afraid she is making the wrong choices. For get #adulting, life doesn’t come with an instruction manual and it’s a nice reminder that nobody is really prepared for what’s about to get thrown at you.

2. Don’t drink the pain away.

…Because this will happen. And no one will like you.

3. Feelings are not permanent.

Too often we get caught up in envy, excitement, disgust, or some other feeling that we end up missing the reality of the situation. Remember, feelings are like the ocean, they ebb and flow, it’s more important to ride the wave of that feeling then to act on it and leave a lasting impression on others.

4. Be humble & Always wear a helmet.

An important lesson in humility. We don’t have to pretend to be more than we actually are. Embrace what you don’t know so this doesn’t happen to you:

5. You can choose your family.

As someone whose stepdad (who I actually call my dad) came into my life after way too many years of missing the reality only to hold onto feelings (read #3), I can attest to the fact that family are the people we choose to have in our life. At the end of the day Will Ferrell’s character says it best “Everyone can be a father, but not everyone can be a dad”.

As I’ve grown more into this whole “adult” thing, I’ve realized that family is there for the good and the messy times. In Will Ferrell’s characters words,

“Dad’s suck it up. Dad’s keep our promises, even when we make numerous mistakes. Dad’s maintain a presence in their kids lives, even when… especially when their lives are messy.”

– more than that, family doesn’t try to change you. They accept you. It’s not a scorecard, its “how can I understand and help?”

6. When in doubt, dance it out.
